What Does Queensland Recumbent Trikes Mean to Us?
Published by Susan Syddall, last updated:
Why did we start Queensland Recumbent? Our adventure into recumbent bikes began with a personal story.
Due to back and neck problems for the past few years (since Nov 2000), my husband’s ability to enjoy a social life and the great outdoors has been severely restricted. Well, more accurately, it had come to a grounding halt! The great outdoors isn’t so great when moving about in it causes pain. This severely affected not only my husband but our whole family as well.
Now for the good news … recumbent trikes!
Recumbent trikes offer the support and flexibility Eric needs to be able to get out and be physically active again. While walking is still a problem, a recumbent trike provides the back and neck support that allows him to exercise, explore and enjoy the world again! Words can’t express the joy that this brings to Eric and our whole family.
Why Do Recumbent Trikes Work So Well?
On a normal bike, vibrations and shocks travel along your spine. Sitting on the bicycle seat may result in the compression of nerves and blood vessels in the vulnerable area of the body called the perineum. This in turn can lead to temporary or permanent groin numbness, tingling sensations and a few other not so topical problems. These road shocks are effectively absorbed over an area of about 200x100mm (200cm2 or 8″x4″), if you’re lucky.
The main advantage of recumbent bike seating is the road shocks are instead absorbed across the spine over an increased area of about 250*800mm (2,000cm2 or 8″x24″ or greater). Riding in a recumbent seat* is as comfortable as sitting in your favourite arm chair. The recumbent trike or bike cushions your ‘seat’ and back, right up to your shoulders. OK, maybe a full arm chair is pretty good but a recumbent trike gets you out and about with your family and friends!
For us, a recumbent trike has meant a new world, literally!
Which is why we want to support others in finding their way into recumbent trikes so they too will have the opportunity to exercise, explore and enjoy their world through Queensland Recumbent!
Sometimes we can’t change our circumstances but we can make adjustments to make the most of what we have.
Welcome to the world of recumbent trikes!
We’re Here to Help You!
We understand the difficulties in getting the right seat and wheels under you, especially when physical limitations are in play. We know this from both personal experience as well as from the experiences of clients.
Over the years, we have had many wonderful experiences here at Queensland Recumbent as clients who have come with great difficulties getting around have left with very big smiles on their faces. Many have thought that riding a recumbent trike was beyond them only to be thrilled by the discovery that they could ride!
They’ve come with walkers, walking sticks or a helping hand and encouragement from a loved one.
As Eric says …
“I’m a bit dependent on 6 wheels (in the form a wheelchair) though it is more my back and neck that create the issues for me. I am lucky I can pedal quite OK but I need to have a trike system that allows for road bounce and vibrations or I can’t get very far down the road.
Because of my physical situation, I have a greater sense of understanding when people feel frustrated about not only finding a trike that may work for them, while also being able to get the help needed to make the trike suit their specific needs. Not many businesses want to spend time talking!”
The Original Idea
We provide time and equipment to our clients so that they can make an informed decision before outlaying money on something very important. We understand you need to get it right. We’re happy to spend time to make the trike fit each person’s unique abilities/disabilities. To date, we have been able to get all bar one client onto a recumbent seat: there are limitations and we realise that.
People who suffer limitations are very keen to stretch their arena, get outside and meet people, become involved and have an outlet. We love to help make this happen and see the smile at the end of the process.
The New Idea: Bigger, Better, More Time, More Help, More Coverage, More Equipment
Over the past few months, we have greatly expanded our stock and the types of recumbent trikes. We now have trikes in stock from ICE (UK), Catrike (USA), HP velotechnik (Germany), Hase Bikes (Germany) as well as Greenspeed (Australia).
We have some excellent quality recumbent trikes which are fantastic to ride.
