Sometimes we can’t change our circumstances but we can make adjustments to make the most of what and whom we have. Welcome to the world of recumbent trikes!
Tuesday 21st May 2019
Yesterday Ian lost his battle with liver cancer, leaving a giant hole in the trike industry …and more importantly, in the hearts of his huge GreenSpeed family.
It was so much more than a business for Ian. Trikes were his passion but with the singular focus of bringing healing and freedom to the customer. That was always the goal.
Before he left us, he arranged to transfer GreenSpeed into the capable hands of his wife, Ching. She knows the business well and has some great resources to draw from.
Thank you for coming to visit us and we’re here to help you, best we can.
New Ideas for June 2018, a new beginning and new directions – keep watching Queensland Recumbent Trikes now the Recumbent Company.
What Does Recumbent Company and Trikes Mean to Us?
Published by Susan Syddall, last updated:
Why did we start Queensland Recumbent (now Recumbent Company)? Our adventure into recumbent bikes began with a personal story.
Back and neck problems (since Nov 2000) severely restricted Eric’s ability to enjoy a social life and the great outdoors. Well, more accurately, it had come to a grounding halt! The great outdoors isn’t so great when moving about in it causes pain. This severely affected not only Eric’s but our whole family as well.
Now for the good news … recumbent trikes!
Recumbent trikes offer the support and flexibility Eric needs to be able to get out and be physically active again. While walking is still a problem, a recumbent trike provides the back and neck support that allows him to exercise, explore and enjoy the world again! Words can’t express the joy that this brings to Eric and our whole family.
Why Do Recumbent Trikes Work So Well?
On a normal bike, vibrations and shocks travel along your spine. Sitting on the bicycle seat may result in the compression of nerves and blood vessels in the vulnerable area of the body called the perineum. This in turn can lead to temporary or permanent groin numbness, tingling sensations and a few other not so topical problems. These road shocks are effectively absorbed over an area of about 200 x 100mm (200cm2 or 8″ x 4″), if you’re lucky.
The main advantage of recumbent bike seating is the road shocks are absorbed across a greatly increased area of your torso. Riding in a recumbent seat* can be as comfortable as sitting in your favourite arm chair. The recumbent trike or bike cushions your ‘seat’ and back, right up to your shoulders. OK, maybe a full arm chair is pretty good but a recumbent trike actually gets you out and about – in life!
For us, a recumbent trike has meant a new world, literally!
A few things that determined why we are dealing with recumbent trikes:
- Being stopped on the road or footpath by someone asking: what is that, where did you get it, can I try it…
- the immense difference it has made at this house, and everyone in the family loves the effect and trikes
…is why we are and importantly why we want and how we are qualified to support others in finding their way into recumbent trikes. You too can have the opportunity to exercise, explore and enjoy your world through Queensland Recumbent -> Recumbent Company!
We’re Here to Help You!
We understand the difficulties in getting the right seat and wheels under you, especially when physical limitations are in play. We know this from both personal experience as well as from the experiences of clients.
Over the years, we have had many wonderful experiences here at Queensland Recumbent -> Recumbent Company as clients who have come with great difficulties getting around, have left with very big smiles on their faces. Many have thought that riding a recumbent trike was beyond them only to be thrilled by the discovery that they could ride!
They’ve come with walkers, walking sticks or a helping hand and encouragement from a loved one.
As Eric says …
“I’m a bit dependent on wheels. It’s more my back and neck that create the issues for me as I am lucky I can pedal quite OK. I need a system that allows for road bounce, vibrations and maximum torso support or I can’t get very far down the road. ie: must have at least rear suspension…
My physical situation gives a great understanding of people feeling frustrated about finding or trying a solution (trike) that may work for them. Not being able to talk to someone about this strange new recumbent world goes away here. Not many businesses want to spend time talking, but we will!”
The Original Idea
We provide time and equipment to our clients so that they can make an informed decision before outlaying money on something very important. We understand you need to get it right and we’re happy to spend time to make the trike fit each person’s unique abilities/disabilities where possible. To date, we have been able to get all bar one serious disabled client onto a recumbent seat. We know there are limitations and we realise that and work hard to get a result.
People who suffer limitations are very keen to stretch their arena, get outside and meet people, become involved and have an outlet. We love to help make this happen and see the smile at the end of the process.
The New Idea: More Equipment, More solutions and More brands.
From the start of June 2018 we have greatly expanded our stock and the types of recumbent trikes. From originally supplying GS recumbents here and there, we have totally reinvented “QR” to create Recumbent Company with recumbent trikes from ICE (Inspired Cycle Engineering – UK), Catrike (USA), HP Velotechnik (Germany) and Hase Bikes (Germany).
We have some excellent quality recumbent trikes which are fantastic to ride.
It’s Your Turn to Think Big
Make an appointment to come and visit us or call and see what we can arrange for you. We’d love to help.
A great way to start is to get your seat into one of our recumbent seats for a test ride and experience what a pleasure recumbent trikes are to ride.
Who is a Recumbent Trike For?
Everyone! Recumbent trikes are a great comfortable and safe method of moving around.
When you need to stop, you can sit right where you are with no balance or seat surface area issues.
A recumbent trike uses essentially the same components as a bike. Though if someone tells you recumbents and bikes are the same thing, they probably haven’t ridden a recumbent trike. Come try one.
Give us a call today! We’d love to hear from you.
